Diagnostic Pattern

"I'm not cut out to be a leader"

The symptom is real. The cause is usually somewhere else.

You got promoted. Now you are winging it, and you are not sure you are cut out to lead. It looks like a capability ceiling, or impostor syndrome. It may actually be simpler: you were promoted for technical excellence and given no leadership training. Untrained is not the same as incapable.

What you think it is

I got promoted into this and honestly I'm winging it. I'm not sure I'm cut out to be a leader.

So you blame your ability. You read the discomfort as a sign about who you are, decide you are not cut out for it, and start eyeing the exit.

What it usually is

A hypothesis to test, not an indictment on you or the team.

You were promoted for your skillset as an individual contributor, then handed a role that runs on a different one: a leadership skillset no one trained you to build. Communication, design, and execution, on a base of decision-making and problem-solving. The order is fixed: mindset, then skillset. Skip the training and the gap shows up as overwhelm, which is a signal that the role changed, not a sign about your ceiling. That is an accidental manager, not a capability problem. You may be confusing untrained with not cut out.

How to tell

What formal preparation did you actually get for this role? Sort what you feel you are failing at: which parts are about you, and which are skills no one ever taught you? Is the gap capability, opportunity, or motivation?

The move

If you are looking for leadership, start with a mirror: what made you successful before, and which of those fundamentals carry into leading others? Then name the leadership skillset the role actually needs, and build it deliberately. Skills are hard at first, like riding a bike, then they stay with you for good. Mindset first. Skillset next.

You might think you are not cut out for it. It may actually be that no one ever trained you.
