Diagnostic Pattern

"We have a plan from the new owners and the team is going through the motions"

The symptom is real. The cause is usually somewhere else.

There is a plan, it is clear, everyone can recite it, and nothing much is actually moving. It looks like resistance or a people problem. It may actually be that the goal was handed down rather than built, so what you are seeing is compliance rather than execution.

What you think it is

We have the plan from the new owners. Everyone nods. Not much is actually happening.

So you add accountability, increase the reporting cadence, and start questioning whether you have the right people.

What it usually is

A hypothesis to test, not an indictment on you or the team.

In G.A.M.E. Plan, vertical alignment is required and goals nest through a parent goal - they do not merge, and repetition is alignment rather than duplication. When a plan arrives fully formed from outside, teams often repeat the owner's words instead of building their own layer beneath them, which looks identical in a meeting and behaves completely differently on a Tuesday. The tell is that nobody can say what their three actions are in their own words. And an operating system someone else runs is not yours: if it needs the owner or a consultant to keep it alive, it will stop when they look away.

How to tell

Ask three of your leaders what their goal is and how it connects to the owner's plan. Do the answers nest underneath it in their own words - or are they repeating the plan back to you?

The move

Have each team build their own layer under the parent goal: no more than three goals, three actions each, three metrics each, in their language. Then run plan, do, reflect, adjust on a real cadence. The plan you get will be less tidy than the one that came down and considerably more likely to happen.

You might think the team is resisting the plan. It may actually be that they were never asked to build their part of it.
